Thankful To Be Alive Today

22 years ago today on Easter morning, i was in a hotel in downtown Charlotte NC where I had gone with some Grateful Dead-head college friends who had tickets to the Final Four (the year the Hogs won the national championship). realizing I had forgotten to bring any shampoo, I unwisely took off walking outside the hotel alone to find some. What little I could find was ethnic haircare that wouldn't work for my hair, so I had to keep looking from block to block. Homeless men cheerfully raised their paper-sacked bottles to me and wished me happy Easter as church bells rang throughout Charlotte's beautiful downtown. Two different men sitting in parked cars asked me if i wanted a ride, thinking I was a prostitute. How fast could they have thrown all 95 lbs of me into their trunk, like a sack o'taters? Mama & Daddy had no idea I was in Charlotte (17 hours from where I was supposed to be, in Fayetteville), and the people I was with couldn't have called the police if I had gone missing (because of things they had in their possession). I finally found some Johnson's baby shampoo in a little corner store and went on to watch the Razorbacks win the Final Four at a sports bar.

None of that seemed like a big deal whatsoever at the time, but when I think of what I would do to Aubrey if she went off and did that without telling me, it's not good… LOL. I thank God for the angels He has given charge over me all the days of my life. Exactly 10 years later, on Easter 2004, after a few months of Bible reading, struggle, and prayer, God took the desire for alcohol away from me… He raised ME from the dead.
